Have you ever felt like giving up? We have. Everyone has.
Sometimes we feel we’re not in the place we want to be in life, or our heart’s been broken, or we didn’t get the job we wanted. And so we start to feel down, frustrated, resentful, or like we’re not enough.
It’s normal to feel this way. It’s human.
But the secret to a better life lies in not staying in that place.
Of course it’s not always easy, right? If it were easy, we’d feel down for 3 seconds then we’d be back up again. And God knows some of us have been with a little gray cloud over our head for days or even weeks at a time.
So, how do you bounce back?
How do you stand back up, roll up your sleeves, look straight ahead and start marching again?
Shavon Moses, a Shapermint Gal, nicely summarizes what we should do in the face of adversity.
Whatever you want to do in life, never give up, and follow your dreams.
When it gets hard, here are 3 other simple yet powerful things you can do to keep plowing through.
1. Learn & Memorize This One Word
Yeah, it’s true. Life gives some mean blows every once in a while. But don’t forget that you also have the choice to decide how you take these blows.
However you choose to feel, that’s the attitude you adopt.
If there’s one thing you take away from this article, let it be that word: Attitude.
Your attitude will dictate whether you spiral down an eternal hole, or bloom up towards the sky.
And there’s many ways to keep a positive attitude, one of the most powerful ways to do it is being grateful.
Be grateful for the little things, like the fact that you can take a big breath of fresh air, or that you have clean water to drink, that you can enjoy delicious meals, that you can move, and many other things.
Do this small practice every day, develop the right attitude, and things will start to go your way.
“The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all.” - The Emperor, from the movie Mulan.
2. Realize that Life is a Game
How is it that we LOVE the twists, turns, and uncertainties from our favorite movies, but get thrown back from the twists and turns in our own lives?
There seems to be a disconnect there.
The reason we enjoy it so much in movies is because there’s a quick resolution, usually in less than 2 hours - at least we have the hope there will be a happy ending.
So why don’t we have the faith there will be a happy ending in our life?
Next time you get caught in a rut, know that it won’t last forever.
And if the low moments start to last longer than you’d like, go back to point #1 of this article.
3. Let Go of Your Inner Control Freak
This is closely related to point #2.
Life is full of unpredictable, but mostly, uncontrollable events. And when something out of our control happens, we go a little crazy (c’mon, let’s be honest here).
And that’s ok, a little craziness is part of life.
But hold that craziness too long and it’ll turn into stiffness and anxiety - sucking away the joy from your life.
If you don’t want to reach that point, accept what has come your way and have faith that all is well.
In simple words, learn to surrender.
And you can do that in 2 steps:
1. Ask yourself what outcome you’re afraid of. And then question if it’s actually something to be afraid of.
2. Ask yourself, would letting go feel like freedom? It almost always will.
“You must learn to let go. Release the stress. You were never in control anyway.” ~Steve Maraboli
